Traffic Light Info 2.0

  • Infrastructure

As the first city in Europe, Ingolstadt installed the smart traffic light information system together with Audi. A total of 160 intersections across the city are therefore being equipped with smart traffic lights. Via the Smart City interface, it is possible to provide the traffic lights’ digital status data free of charge as open data to all interested parties, software and app developers, and the automotive industry. With the introduction of the Smart City interface, the City of Ingolstadt is taking a pioneering role in the field of traffic light-to-vehicle communication.

Through online connectivity with the city’s infrastructure, traffic light phase information can be displayed and used in all new Audi vehicles. For example, the required speed to reach the next green light can be displayed.

In addition, Audi’s digital traffic light assistant can suggest reducing speed about 250 meters before reaching the next traffic light so that drivers arrive at the next intersection in time for green.

If a stop at a red light cannot be avoided, a countdown counts the seconds until the next green phase. This allows the vehicle to coast smoothly, actively saving fuel.
